Suspect sought in sex assault on 9-year-old girl

THORNTON, Colo. - Thornton police are searching for a man accused of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl who required hospitalization.

According to police, the sexual assault occurred on Sunday at 10 p.m. in the 9100 block of Huron Street.  Police weren't contacted until the child was taken to North Suburban Medical Center in the early-morning hours Wednesday.

The victim was transferred to Children's Hospital, due to the nature of her injuries, police said.

On Wednesday afternoon, Thornton police investigators obtained an arrest warrant for 35-year-old Steve Allen Pierce.  He is accused of sexual assault on a child and sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust.  Police said Pierce was known to the victim.

Pierce is described as a white man, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 200 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. He was last known to have a goatee and occasionally wears glasses.

Pierce is a convicted felon and failed to register as a sex offender in Larimer County, according to public records examined by 7NEWS.  Pierce is on parole for theft from Adams County, according to the same records.

"The suspect is currently at large and considered dangerous," police said.
