DENVER – A suspect is dead and a deputy is in the hospital following an altercation in Adams County early Thursday.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy was conducting a welfare check at an apartment in the 8700 block of Galen Court at about 3:30 a.m. when the deputy heard some kind of disturbance in a neighboring apartment and saw a suspect run from the scene.

When the deputy tried to apprehend the suspect, the two got into a physical fight, deputies said.

During the fight, the deputy fired his gun, injuring the suspect. The deputy also sustained injuries to his head and neck.

Both the deputy and suspect were taken to the hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead. The deputy continues to undergo treatment; an update on his condition wasn’t immediately available.

The deputy, who has not been identified, will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
