Street racer pleads guilty in hit-and-run that killed 15-year-old boy crossing street in Lakewood

DENVER - A man pleaded guilty Monday to a hit-and-run crash that killed a teenager crossing the street.

Investigators said Derrick L. Fransua, 22, was street racing when he ran a red light and ran over 15-year-old Gerard Julien who was jogging in a crosswalk at the intersection of South Kipling Parkway and West Asbury Avenue in Lakewood on July 20.

Fransua pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident involving death. He faces up to 24 years in prison when he is sentenced next month.

"Gerry" Julien was out jogging as part of his military academy training.

Julien wanted to be a Navy SEAL and was attending the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas. He was on his way to "becoming a man," his father said.

He was staying with his family in Lakewood over the summer break, his father said.
