STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. - Prosecutors have formally filed child abuse charges against a Steamboat Springs woman in the death of her 3-year-old boy, whom police say may have been left alone for nearly 20 hours in a cabin that contained human waste and partially eaten food.
The Steamboat Springs Pilot & Today reports 23-year-old Meghan McKeon faces two counts of child abuse resulting in death. If convicted, she could be sentenced to eight to 24 years in prison on each count.
McKeon waived a formal reading of the charges Thursday. She hasn't entered a plea.
Her son, Austin Davis, died March 27.
Police say they believe the child was left alone while McKeon went to work and then spent the night at her boyfriend's house.
The cause of death hasn't been determined.
