BOULDER, Colo. - A smoking ban begins Friday on the popular Pearl Street Mall in Boulder.

Boulder's city council passed the ban in December. It prohibits tobacco and marijuana smoking along a four-block mall area.

People caught smoking face a $500 fine for their first and second offense within two years.

A third offense within two years comes with a $1,000 fine or up to 90 days in jail.

Officers are expected to spend a few weeks educating the public about the ban.

Ticketing will likely begin in March.

City officials told 7NEWS that residents and business owners have complained for years about smoking around the popular shopping area.
