Two people have been injured after a small plane crashed between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale.

The Garfield County Sheriff's Office says the plane crashed Sunday at about 10:15 a.m. in a field near the Rio Grande Trail, on the west side of Highway 82.

The pilot was trapped and later freed. The pilot and a second person in the plane were transported to the hospital to be treated for their injuries. Officials did not provide information about the extent of their injuries.

"Fortunately no fire ensued, allowing rescue operations to proceed," the sheriff's office said in a statement.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.

The RFTA/Rio Grande Trail will be closed in the vicinity of the crash to preserve the scene, the sheriff's office said. People wishing to use the trail from Glenwood to Carbondale are encouraged to use the alternative path along County Road 109 from the Hardwick Bridge.
