CANON CITY, Colo. - A man accused of killing a mother and her two young children has been told he could face the death penalty if he is convicted.
Jaacob Van Winkle was told by a judge at his first appearance hearing he is facing charges of first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual assault. Van Winkle asked for an attorney after he was told of the possibility of capital punishment. Autopsies are scheduled Tuesday on the three victims.
Van Winkle was arrested after the woman's teenage daughter fled a Colorado home Sunday night and alerted a neighbor, who called police in Canon City, about 115 miles south of Denver.
The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released. None of the victims has been identified.
