WESTMINSTER, Colo. - A security guard assigned to a Westminster apartment complex shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at him, police said Saturday.
It happened at about 1:25 a.m. at the Sunset Ridge Apartments at 8300 Sheridan Boulevard.
Johnny Secrest told 7NEWS his cousin was confronted by the security guard while peeing next to a dumpster in the complex's parking lot.
"That’s when we were confronted by the security guard who was shining his light and telling us that he was going to detain us for breaking the law," Secrest said.
"I’m like you’re not a police officer, you wanna detain me, call the cops and I’ll be more than willing to be detained," Secrest continued.
He said the security guard followed them back to their apartment while threatening to mase them. When they got to their unit, he said his cousin, 24-year-old David Ludwig, walked in and came back out with an airsoft gun.
Westminster Police said witnesses reported the security guard was retreating and attempted to get behind cover after realizing the Ludwig had a weapon. The individual allegedly had a handgun, raised it, and pointed it at the security guard. The security guard fired his weapon, striking this individual.
"I heard David go, well how would you like it if you had someone point a gun at you? And that's when he [the guard] started firing," Secrest said.
Police found the man wounded in the parking lot. He was transported to a local area hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
Secrest said they didn't know the security guard was armed.
"I will say this, it was a mistake. If anybody thinks about pulling out an airsoft gun, it's not a real gun and it'll get you killed. That was his mistake, but this security guard was overzealous and continued to harass us all the way until the end," Secrest said.
Police said the investigation is active and ongoing.
No arrests have been made.
