DURANGO, Colo. - Authorities say an investigator with the La Plata County Sheriff's Office is recovering after he was accidentally shot in the leg.
Sheriff's spokesman Dan Bender tells The Durango Herald (http://bit.ly/1b06jHx ) that investigator Tom Cowing's handgun discharged when it fell out of his car and bounced on the ground near Vallecito Reservoir on Friday morning.
Cowing, who was treated at a nearby hospital, was helping in a search related to the disappearance of 13-year-old Dylan Redwine.
The boy disappeared in the wooded area before Thanksgiving of last year while visiting his father. His remains were found in June, but no one has been charged in connection with his death.
Investigators said Friday's search was routine and not related to any new leads. They were hoping that recent storms might have uncovered evidence in the case.
