Safeway to close 9 grocery stores in Denver area

DENVER - Safeway officials have announced they are closing nine grocery stores in the Denver metro area.

The nine locations slated for closure on June 13 are:

  • 560 Castle Pines Parkway, Castle Pines
  • 3904 East 120 th Ave, Thornton
  • 12900 Zuni, Westminster
  • 16921 E. Quincy Ave, Aurora
  • 22675 East Aurora Parkway, Aurora
  • 1955 South Sheridan Blvd., Denver
  • 7500 S. Pierce Street, Littleton
  • 1730 S. Buckley Road, Aurora
  • 8200 S. Quebec, Centennial

Safeway Spokeswoman Kris Staaf said Saturday the stores will be closed by June 13.

Safeway officials say they have been evaluating operations at the stores extensively, considering ways to improve performance, for more than a year.

Staaf says the stores that are closing are not profitable and efforts will be made to place employees at other stores.
