SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. — A collision involving a runaway semi-trailer injured three on Loveland Pass Tuesday morning. The highway was closed most of the day but reopened just after 6 p.m.
The truck was hauling a load of beer when it lost control, overturned and crashed into two eastbound vehicles. Investigators said it slid about 740 feet before coming to a rest on the runaway truck ramp. Cases of Michelob Ultra spilled onto the road.
"The vehicles are in bad shape. They all went to the hospital but I think they're going to be okay," said Larry Leward of Ski Country Towing.
One person involved in the crash was transported to the hospital with significant injuries, according to Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue.
The highway was closed for several hours while crews cleared the scene. Lewark said the driver was rerouted from the tunnels to Loveland Pass and was inexperienced driving the steep mountain highway.
"This is what can end up happening. They don't know how to use their engine brakes and take it easy down these roads," Lewark said.
It’s not known what caused the driver of the truck to lose control.
