WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. -- Residents are still working to get their homes back together from May's hailstorm. Thousands of homes and cars were damaged in the Denver metro area. Wheat Ridge was one of the towns that was hit hard.

You can still hear pounding and hammering throughout the streets.

Bernard Feldman recalls the night of the storm.

"I really didn't know what was going on; it was quite a shock," said Feldman.

His home, like thousands of others, suffered damage.

"I had three windows broke, and a window screen and one of the shutters," Feldman said.

Denver7 called a handful of roofing companies who are doing work in Wheat Ridge. Some said the process is taking longer to start repairs compared to other cities.

Approving permit applications and having inspectors look at the roofs of damaged homes is a struggle for a smaller city.

A city spokesperson said they had to reach out for help, and as far as California. The city was able to contract with other companies to bring in more inspectors. They also reached out to other cities in the state for more man power, but they couldn't help because of the busy summer months of construction.

Feldman said he understands the crunch to get all the roofs fixed.

The city said they're finally reducing the backlog.
