COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A campaign is underway to recall El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa, who has been accused of having sexual affairs with subordinates and committing other improprieties.
Volunteers said they had about 1,700 signatures on a petition within hours of starting the effort Monday.
The Colorado Springs Gazette reports the group needs more than 44,000 signatures to get a recall on the November ballot.
Maketa is term-limited and will leave office in January unless he is recalled in November.
Maketa has been accused of having affairs with three female subordinates, promoting them and lying about it.
He's also been accused of discrimination, budget improprieties and creating a hostile work environment.
In a video sent to Sheriff's Office employees, Maketa admitted he "engaged in inappropriate behavior in the past" and apologized.
