Rebecca Maez, wrong-way driver in deadly crash, gets 10 years in Colorado prison

Maez apologizes during Denver court sentencing

DENVER - A woman who drove the wrong way in HOV lanes and caused a deadly crash last year was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a Denver judge on Friday.

Rebecca Maez, 28, had earlier pleaded guilty earlier to vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

Prosecutors say Maez was driving drunk when she drove the wrong direction in Interstate 25 HOV lanes in the early morning hours of August 31, 2013 and crashed into an northbound vehicle near Auraria Parkway.

The crash seriously injured the other car's driver, Jeremy Depinto, and killed his passenger, 34-year-old Jenny Friede.

During an emotional sentencing hearing, Depinto called Friede his "soul mate."

Maez accepted full responsibility for her actions and apologized to those in court.

Maez, who had been free on bond, was taken from the courtroom in handcuffs to begin her prison sentence.
