Hail hit the Highlands Ranch area between 4 and 5 p.m.

Denver7 crews out covering the storm helped several people caught out in the hail.

Another woman who was caught in the hail while waiting for a bus also took shelter in a Denver7 news vehicle.

A Severe Storm Warning was in effect for a large part of the metro area and to the south and west Monday evening.

"[An] automated rainfall gauge in Lone Tree indicated 1.69" of rain in one hour!" the National Weather Service in Boulder tweeted at about 5:30 p.m.

Heavy rain also left standing water in many areas.

Strong thunderstorms caused delays and diversions at Denver International Airport Monday night, according to Denver7 Reporter Marc Stewart.

At least one flight was diverted to Colorado Springs and a Delta Airlines flight was diverted to Rapids City, South Dakota, Stewart reported.
