Poudre School District fires its HR Director, Chuck DeWayne, following several 7News investigations

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Poudre School District in Fort Collins fired a high-level administrator Tuesday evening, following a long suspension and a series of 7NEWS investigations into his side business.

Board members voted 6-0 to terminate Executive Director of Human Resources Chuck DeWayne's , effective Tuesday.

The move follows a series of 7NEWS investigations into DeWayne's involvement with Organo Gold, a multi-level coffee and tea direct sales business.

DeWayne was placed on paid-administrative leave in Dec. 2013. Taxpayers paid DeWayne's annual salary of $141,820, according to school district records.

7NEWS first exposed DeWayne's Organo Gold business plan, sent from his district email account, outlining his plans to leverage his position within the school district to personally profit.

7NEWS also spoke with a school district employee about Organo Gold. She came forward after our initial 7NEWS investigation.  The district employee claimed she was pressured by a different administrator to buy in to Organo Gold during an off-campus pitch her supervisor invited her to.

DeWayne's actions led the Poudre Education Association (PEA) representing teachers to file two grievances against him citing a conflict of interest and violation of school district policy. The first grievance was filed last year. Since then, at least four district employees have come forward to the PEA and district claiming they were pressured by DeWayne or other district supervisors to buy-in to Organo Gold.

Fran Docherty is the UniServ Director for the PEA. He said the teachers union is ready to move forward with new leadership following the school board's decision to terminate DeWayne.

"I feel reaffirmed, I feel vindicated, I feel like we're moving in the right direction," explained Docherty.

The Poudre School District appointed Doug Hartman as the interim director of human resources in January.

Superintendent Dr. Sandra Smyser declined our multiple requests for an on-camera interview. A spokeswoman provided 7NEWS with this statement after the board's decision:

"Tonight, the Poudre School District Board of Education voted to confirm Superintendent Dr. Sandra Smyser's decision to terminate Chuck DeWayne's employment with PSD. Mr. Doug Hartman will continue as interim executive director of human resources for the remainder of the school year. Mr Hartman will lead the posting and hiring process for the executive director of HR position and will help with transition once a final selection is made. Dr. Smyser will not be issuing any further statements or comments regarding this matter at this time."
