Poudre River close to flood stage, rising; residents urged to stay clear of river bank

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Officials in Fort Collins say water levels along the Poudre River are rising due to rainfall and it is rapidly approaching flood stage.

Flood stage for the Poudre is 7 1/2 feet, but officials say the river could hit 7 feet 2 inches by Monday afternoon.

Local residents were urged to avoid flooded areas and to stay clear of river banks.

Also on Monday, the body of a 14-year-old boy who reportedly fell or slipped into the rising Poudre River while fishing with friends was recovered about 8 miles from where he was swept away.

The incident occurred near the Ouzel campground and picnic area in Poudre Canyon, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.

The Ouzel campground/picnic area is about 12 miles west of Ted's Place, at the mouth of the canyon.
