DENVER - Authorities in Washington State are investigating a potential sighting of a child rapist who escaped from his parole in Colorado.
Eric Eugene Hartwell, 51, was convicted of raping a child in 1991 and attempted indecent liberties in 1996. He is registered as a sex offender to an address in Denver, but cut off his ankle monitor and escaped parole on Feb. 21.
The Colorado Department of Corrections said authorities began searching for the Hartwell 22 minutes later.
Thursday, the Eastern Washington University Police Department sent an advisory to the campus warning of a possible sighting of Hartwell. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that local law enforcement is indeed investigating that potential sighting.
The campus is located in Cheney, Washington. Hartwell's 1991 and 1996 convictions occurred in that state, as did his first escape from parole. In that escape Hartwell also cut off his ankle monitor.
