Possible compromise for Elk Meadow Dog Park may keep it partially open

EVERGREEN, Colo. -- A groundswell of support and a well-timed snowstorm may have saved the Elk Meadow Dog Off Leash Area -- at least part of it. 

Jefferson County Open Space officials told Denver7 last week that the park would be fully closed, citing overuse and massive amounts of dog waste. That was supposed to be announced at a public meeting on February 23. 

Weather postponed that meeting, giving support groups like "Friends of Elk Meadow Dog Park" more time to petition, protest, and come up with a compromise that would keep part of the park open. 

The group posted to their Facebook page: "The Elk Meadow Off Leash Dog Park will probably close on April 4, 2017 for restoration, leaving the two fenced areas OPEN to off leash dogs."

According to the group, the fenced in areas that will remain open will "probably" be managed by the group itself, which is made up of volunteers. 

JeffCo Open Space says there is no official agreement in place. 

The future of the park will be discussed at a public meeting tonight at 6pm at the Buchanan Rec Center in Evergreen.

A planned "Save our dog park" rally has been canceled due to the recent developments.
