Aurora Police have identified the man who was arrested after one of their officers was violently attacked.

Investigators say Garnett Hubbard, 24, and another person were sitting in a car parked along I-225 on Monday morning.

An officer stopped to help, and according to the department, the second man attacked the officer from behind, leaving him with a severe cut to the head.

That suspect stole the officer's squad car, police say; he was driving 65 mph on snow-packed roads. When police stopped the driver near East Alameda Parkway and East Kentucky Avenue, they say the man jumped out holding something, and refused to drop it.

That's when police shot and killed the man.

Police took Hubbard into custody on a charge of disorderly conduct/failure to obey an order.

"In order to conduct additional investigation into the full extent of Hubbard’s involvement, this charge has been dismissed," investigators later stated. "This dismissal does not prevent charges being brought against Hubbard in the future, if appropriate. This is an ongoing investigation and interviews are still being conducted."

The names of the officers involved are not expected to be released this week
