Police: Mother drowned 5-year-old son

Boy's body found after fire in Colo Springs apt

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A 5-year-old Colorado Springs boy who died after an apartment fire on Friday was drowned by his mother, authorities said Sunday night.

An autopsy by the El Paso County Coroner's Office on Jude Marray-Gomez showed he did not die as a result of the fire at the Hill Park Apartments, located at 4320 E. Pikes Peak Ave., but died as the result of drowning.

The boy's mother, 42-year-old Shannon Dodson, has been arrested for investigation of first-degree murder, according to police.  She suffered smoke inhalation from the fire.

Firefighters said the blaze began in a mattress and was reported just before 9:30 a.m. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Public court records show the child's father, Jude Thaddeus Gomez, had petitioned for custody of the boy in January. The next hearing was scheduled for next Friday.

The case continues to be investigated by the CSPD Violent Crimes Unit in conjunction with the District Attorney's Office. Any additional charges will be added after further review of the investigation.
