MONTE VISTA, Colo. - Monte Vista police say a woman who faked her own kidnapping was arrested after showing up to try to collect a $600 ransom.
Police Chief Jim Grayson told 7NEWS Melissa Garcia is facing a criminal extortion charge.
"She was apparently texting her family members over the last couple days saying she was being held against her will," Grayson said.
Then Monday, she demanded a $600 ransom.
"$600 didn't sound right," Grayson said.
Grayson said police arranged for the money to be picked up, set up surveillance and ended up arresting Garcia.
Colorado arrest records show Garcia has previous arrests for DUI in 2001 and theft and fraud in 2013.
