GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - A Grand Junction man was arrested Sunday night after police said the gun he was handling at a hotel went off, injuring a person in the next room.
Police were called to the Mesa Inn on Horizon Drive around 9 p.m. on a report of shots fired.
They found a man with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. The man told police he was in his motel room when he heard a loud bang and was hit by something, said police spokeswoman Kate Porras.
Officers found a large hole in the wall. When they investigated the occupants of the next room they discovered Zachariah McCullough was handling a large revolver when the gun went off, Porras said.
"The bullet went through the wall. Shrapnel from the blast hit the victim in the adjacent room," Porras said in a news release.
McCullough, 26, was charged with prohibited use of a weapon, illegal discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment and third-degree assault.
The victim was treated a local hospital and released with minor injuries, Porras said.
