FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Police are warning about two new scams involving MoneyPak cards.
Green Dot MoneyPak cards are sold at over 50,000 locations across the country. They can be used for funding PayPal accounts and to pay phone, cable or credit card bills.
In the first scam, a caller says you've won a sweepstakes and to claim your prize you need to pay the taxes.
"The caller, who is quite convincing, will tell you to make the payment via a Green Dot MoneyPak card," Fort Collins police said.
Investigators said the caller tells victims to scratch off the serial number on the back and provide it to the sweepstakes representative.
"Unfortunately, you just gave them your money and the sweepstakes is a fraud," police said.
In the second scam, sellers on eBay and Craigslist ask you to pay via MoneyPak cards.
"Again, you are asked to provide them with the serial number on the card," Police said. "However, there is no merchandise and you have given them your money."
MoneyPak card's warn customers to only use the card with businesses listed at www.moneypak.com. Don't trust companies with the MoneyPak logo, you must look at the website for approved businesses.
