DENVER - Police have identified a 65-year-old man as the gunman who entered a Denver high-rise senior living facility and shot another man before taking his own life on Thursday afternoon.
According to the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner, Bennie Mendez shot himself inside the Metro Manor high-rise at 1523 Quitman St. at about 2:30 p.m. The medical examiner said the cause of death is a gunshot wound and the manner of death is suicide.
The man shot by the gunman was transported to the hospital in critical condition, said Denver Police spokeswoman Raquel Lopez. The victim's condition Friday was not known.
Some witnesses have said the shooting victim was the manager of the high-rise, although police haven't confirmed any details about the victim.
People who identified themselves as relatives of Mendez said he was a resident of the building and was upset about the manager's plans to inspect his apartment.
After an argument with the manager Thursday morning, Mendez returned in the afternoon with a shotgun and shot the manager, relatives and eyewitnesses told the Denver Post.
