STERLING, Colo. - Police have arrested a sex offender accused of hugging a child at a recreation center, then touching the child's genitals.
Officers said they were called to the Sterling Recreation Center on Monday regarding a possible sex assault on a child.
Witnesses said an adult man asked to hug a 9-year-old boy. While hugging the child, the man fondled the boy's genitals, police said.
An 11-year-old child told police the same man watched him shower, then asked to hug him, but didn't. The child was wearing a bathing suit at the time.
A third child, a 10-year-old boy, said the man grabbed him by the shoulders.
"Sterling Police immediately conducted an investigation into the incident and began working to determine the subject’s identity and location," investigators said.
Officers said they determined Gerald Marquardt, 43, a registered sex offender, had just been arrested in an unrelated incident by another agency.
While the Sterling incident is under investigation, an arrest warrant was obtained for Marquardt on charges of sexual assault on a child and harassment. He is being held without bond.
Marquardt is listed on Logan County sex offender list for charges of sexual assault on a child and sexual assault in the third degree.
