Plan to turn Fort Lyon Correctional Facility into homeless treatment center shot down by lawmakers

DENVER - A plan to turn a former prison into a treatment center for the homeless has been shot down by state lawmakers.

Gov. John Hickenlooper wanted lawmakers to devote some $6 million over two years for the renovation project at the former Fort Lyon Correctional Facility near Las Animas.  The governor proposed using the former prison as a treatment center for the homeless.

But legislative budget writers from both parties disagreed, denying the governor money needed to update the century-old facility. A bill to revive the Fort Lyon plan was defeated Friday in a Senate committee. That leaves the future of the former prison in doubt.
