GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) -- Occidental Petroleum is asking the Colorado Supreme Court to order the county, a school district and other local governments to return nearly $2 million to the company.

The company says it overpaid taxes on the amount of gas sold at the wellhead and the price because it failed to deduct some transportation and processing costs.

If the company wins, Mesa County may have to return $400,000, along with about $150,000 in interest.

According to the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel, the Colorado Court of Appeals has already ruled against the company and the company appealed.

The company did not respond to emails.
