Denver Police: Officers shoot suicidal man with knife who tried to attack officers

Police: Less-lethal efforts to subdue man failed

DENVER - Denver police say officers shot a suicidal man with a knife after he tried to attack officers on Friday morning.

The wounded man was transported to the hospital in critical condition, Denver Police spokesman Sgt. Steve Warneke said.

The shooting happened about 10 a.m. on the grounds of the Cypress Point Apartments, at 1211 S. Quebec Way.

Warneke said officers were called to the area at 9 a.m. They encountered a suicidal man with a knife and were unable to persuade him to drop the weapon.

Officers repeatedly used less-than-lethal weapons in an unsuccessfully effort to subdue the man, Warneke said.

When the man attempted to assault an officer, police shot him, Warneke said.
