GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. — Dental work can be very expensive for families, but there are options in the Denver Metro area to help train your mouth without having to shell out thousands of dollars for the ultimate smile. Cherry Creek Orofacial Myology is a type of therapy helping children and adults improve tongue and facial muscles, changing the way they talk, eat and sleep.

Certified orofacial myologist Mary Ruma-Smith has developed breakthrough techniques that will, in 3 1/2 to 4 months, correct lip, tongue and jaw postures. Exercises are performed by the patient for a few minutes, two to three times a day.

While Ruma-Smith said orofacial myology treatment is not meant to replace the use of braces or other dental work, the exercises can either help change a patient's mouth to not need further dental work or sustain results after braces. Orofacial myologists also work with orthodontists and other dental work providers to balance treatment programs.

Ruma-Smith said a typical program including the initial evaluation, which lasts for about an hour and a half, is around $1,400. Initial exams are $190 and subsequent visits are $75.

Insurance pays for treatment about half of the time. It all depends on the individual's policy and insurance coverage.
