CASTLE ROCK, Colo. - A heartbreaking act of violence inspired one of kindness in Castle Rock Sunday as neighbors came together to help the six children of a woman murdered last week.
Police said Kirsten Lockett of Limon was killed by her estranged husband while she was hiding out at her brother's Castle Rock home.
Even though neighbors didn't know Lockett well, they said they were inspired to raise money for the children Lockett left behind. About a dozen people gathered in Founders Village Park to collect gift cards and cash.
"We're actually right next door to where it happened," said neighbor Holly Brazell, who helped organize the fundraiser."My children -- it really hit them hard knowing that another mother’s life was taken away and she can't see her children grow up."
Brazell said one of the children celebrated a birthday just one day after Lockett was killed, and neighbors helped get a birthday cake.
People have also left flowers in front of the home where Lockett was killed on South Amherst Street, and have started a GoFundMe page.
"All proceeds will go directly to the children involved," said neighbor Lisa Riley.
