DENVER -- For Eileen Darden, the weekends near her south Denver home have been anything but quiet as of late, and more than often, they are loud, fast and sometimes dangerous.
"They call it cruising, but it's more like racing," Darden said. "We don't have any peace. We smell burnt rubber all night long from Friday, Saturday and Sunday weekly."
Sunday night was no exception. Darden said a person driving a Dodge Durango ran the stop sign by her home, drove up onto her lawn and slammed into her fence before driving off.
"We ran out and saw the vehicle was taking off, and it already mowed down our fence and messed up the grass," Darden said.
The crash is just the latest in a string of ongoing problems near South Decatur Street and West Arkansas Avenue. Levi Harow lives next door and said they've had their power knocked out on at least three occasions after racers crashed into nearby power poles.
The problem starts in the nearby Gen X parking lot each weekend, where people gather to burn out their tires and speed around.
"There's like 100, 150 cars out there watching. If you continue to let it go and not address the issue, it's going to get worse," Harow said.
Denver Police said they are aware of the problem and that it's something they are trying to address citywide, although couldn't give specifics. Neighbors don't buy it and say they fear the next casualty could be much worse than a fence.
"It could've took out the neighbor's vehicles. It could've took out the children that are normally out here," Darden said.
