DENVER – Media giant NBCUniversal has entered into an agreement to buy a majority stake in Craftsy, a video how-to startup based in Denver.
The companies did not disclose financial details of the transaction.
Craftsy will join the NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment portfolio, which includes cable channels like Bravo, E!, Syfy and Oxygen.
Craftsy offers video classes and workshops on various crafts, from knitting and quilting to cooking and photography. The website counts 12 million individuals among its customer base and its website sees 2 million active visitors each week.
CEO and co-founder John Levisay will continue to lead the Craftsy team, which will remain at its offices in Denver.
In a letter to Craftsy employees, Levisay said he was “absolutely thrilled” with the deal.
“It will provide us tremendous resources and a massive distribution platform to further pursue our vision of becoming an iconic brand in the maker space via ‘edutainment,’ lifestyle learning and supplies,” he said.
Craftsy currently has 190 employees in Denver and Indianapolis.
