DENVER - An environmental education group plans to open a grassland park and nature center in a low-income, urban Denver neighborhood next year.
Denver's Environmental Learning for Kids group is taking the lead, with help from national and state groups. ELK serves African-Americans and Hispanics to ensure that minorities are not cut off from the opportunities of the natural world.
The park will be in Montbello, adjacent to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge.
Adrian Benepe of the Trust for Public Land says planners across the nation are looking at urban parks as places where children at risk of obesity can exercise. These planners also hope to emphasize science education in the process.e
