COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - The 2012 shooting death of Bernardo Saenz, the owner of a jewelry store in Commerce City has resulted in the conviction of a 23-year-old man.
Anton Valdez was convicted Wednesday of first-degree murder, robbery and conspiracy in the death of Saenz. The trial for Valdez started Monday, where evidence showed that he had shot Saenz four times at close range on March 17, 2012, killing him.
Saenz was in the back room of his shop, La Joyeria jewelry store at 5908 E. 64th Ave. in Commerce City, immediately before being shot. He heard a jewelry case breaking in the front of the store and came out of the back room.
About a week after the shooting, police released a series of surveillance photos showing two men, one brandishing a black handgun, rushing through the jewelry store. A third man drove a getaway car.
Valdez will be sentenced at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in Adams County District Court.
