Mother convicted of encouraging school fight

GREELEY, Colo. - A Weld County jury has convicted a mother of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after she was accused of encouraging her son to fight another boy at a Greeley high school.

Julie Benavidez was arrested in November after her 15-year-old son was in a fight with a student at Jefferson High School. Administrators said she was standing by and encouraging the altercation.

According to the Greeley Tribune, defense attorney Chaz Melihercik said the fact that Benavidez was standing nearby while the boys fought does not mean she encouraged them. Melihercik said the other boy kicked her son in the head, and that was the end of the fight.

Benavidez is scheduled to be sentenced June 10. She was also accused of a misdemeanor traffic violation in the case, and that matter will be discussed at the sentencing.
