More blasting, more delays on I-70 today

DENVER – Rockfall mitigation work on Interstate 70 in the mountains will cause at least an hour-long delay Tuesday.

The Colorado Department of Transportation plans another round of blasting along the interstate between Fall River and Dumont. The work will happen sometime between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Both directions of I-70 will be closed during the blasting, which may take up to an hour or more, CDOT says. The frontage road in the area will also be closed during this time.

CDOT hopes the mitigation work will prevent major rock slides, which are common in the area and usually happen in the spring once the snow melts. 

Mitigation work slowed traffic in the area last week as crews successfully blasted loose rocks from the side of the mountain.
