Mesa Ridge High School teacher accused of sex assault involving student

Roger Thomas French Jr. arrested

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - An El Paso county high school teacher accused of an inappropriate relationship with a student has resigned.

Roger Thomas French Jr., 30, who taught at Mesa Ridge High School, has been charged with sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department.

"While Mesa Ridge High School is in the county’s jurisdiction, the alleged assault occurred in the city’s jurisdiction which is why CSPD completed the investigation," the police department stated in a release issued Thursday.

The investigation began Wednesday evening after a school resource officer with the sheriff's office informed police of the allegation against French involving a female student.

"Following an investigation conducted today by our Crimes Against Children Unit, probable cause was established to charge the teacher," police said.

Police said they believe the incident is isolated but they are continuing their investigation to make sure there are no additional victims.

Mesa Ridge principal Kathi Mata sent a note to parents on Thursday to make them aware of the situation.

According to the high school website, French was a faculty advisor, taught in the instruct and learning labs and taught world history. He resigned Thursday.

Mesa Ridge is in the Widefield School District 3.
