Mesa County mom admits leaving kids to meet ‘male friend' near Powderhorn Resort, report says

2-year-old son died, 4-year-old son hospitalized

MESA COUNTY, Colo. - A Mesa County mother admitted she left her toddler sons alone in her Toyota 4Runner, with its engine running, while she met a man, according to records obtained by The Daily Sentinel.

Now one boy is dead and the other is hospitalized in Aurora.

24-year-old Heather Jensen  told Mesa County sheriff’s investigator she left her children for approximately 90 minutes Tuesday night near Powderhorn Mountain Resort, according to The Daily Sentinel. The 4Runner was impounded Wednesday at the Sheriff’s Department.

KKCO TV talked to the grandfather of the two boys. Robert Mathena identified the dead boy as 2-year-old William Jensen. The grandfather said William’s four-year-old brother, Tyler, was airlifted to The Children’s Hospital in Aurora where he has been placed on life-support, the station reported.

Investigators are waiting for an autopsy to confirm the cause of William's death.

The boys' mother, Heather Jensen, posted a photo of her sons early Wednesday morning on her Facebook page.

The boys' father died in a car accident in Rifle last month, KKCO reported.
