DENVER -- More than 70 people packed a hearing about the future of a proposed medical marijuana center. Why? The Perps 'n' Turps dispensary would be located less than 1,000 feet from a Denver school.
Marijuana shops are supposed to be 1,000 feet from a school but the building at 285 Pearl Street used to be a dispensary. The owner is argues he's within his right to open a new marijuana business in a former location.
The dispensary would be located about 600 feet from the Denver School of Science and Technology Byers campus.
"It’s in the pathway of the way a lot of kids walk to and from school; a lot of kids grab the bus at Alameda. I just think that at this age we don’t need to expose them to marijuana," said Suzannah Brown, a parent who spoke with Denver7.
The hearing officer will write a recommended decision and the director of Excise and License will take it under advisement.
Denver7 cameras tried to record the hearing but an official with the department declined the request stating the station did not provide enough notice. Cameras were kicked out of the meeting and security was called. Denver7 also reached out to the owner of the dispensary for comment, but our request has not been answered.
