DENVER – Street closures are already in place as the city prepares for thousands of marijuana enthusiasts to gather downtown.

Denver's annual 4/20 Festival will blaze on at Denver’s Civic Center Park Thursday beginning at 10 a.m.

The free event will feature a concert by rapper 2 Chainz, which begins at 2 p.m. The rally is expected to go until 8 p.m.

Commuters may want to avoid the area as several roads are closed and will remain blocked until 5 a.m. Friday.

“Basically I’m going to avoid it like the plague. I’m going up to the mountains and hide. Just don’t want to be down here during all that. It’s like armature hour,” said Autumn Binion.

Binion knows from experience what a headache the traffic can be as roads close and tens of thousands of people converge downtown for the rally at Civic Center Park.

“I used to live right up the street and it was a full on nightmare, and you just have to hide your car and bunker down,” said Binion.

City officials are encouraging attendees to use alternative transportation to the event. Parking will be limited.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has partnered with the ride-share service Lyft to offer free or discounted rides during the week, but you’re going to have to work for it.

Miniature “Mile 420” signs will be hidden at major marijuana-related events, each with a promo code that can redeem $42 worth of ride credit.

In March, CDOT and Lyft launched the “the 320 Movement,” which offered discounted rides on Lyft’s fleet of one-of-a-kind vehicles with green wrapping.

If you are planning to join the festivities, keep in mind all of the laws banning the use of marijuana in public places still apply.
