MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. - It was a busy morning on the Manitou Incline, as the popular hiking route up Pikes Peak is closing for repairs until December.
Runners flocked to the former railway before the 6 a.m. cutoff. The Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1w2zCYT ) that one man climbed up and down the Incline nine times on Saturday before it closed. That was Roger Austin, a daily adherent who summited the Incline 719 times in 2013.
One woman said she met her future husband on the incline -- she was going down as he was going up -- and he stopped her to say "Hi."
The hike climbs 2,000 feet in just less than a mile. The route is closed until December, when the trail is expected to reopen after a $1.6 million overhaul meant to address erosion and stabilize its network of jumbled railroad ties.
