BRIGHTON, Colo. - A man charged in the stabbing death of a 67-year-old woman in a wheelchair cried in front of a judge Friday and pleaded guilty to first-degree murder.
Shawn Lopez, who just turned 22, struck a plea deal in which the remaining 10 in the case -- including charges of sexual assault, robbery and kidnapping -- will be dropped, The Denver Post reported.
Lopez was sentenced to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole. Before he begins serving that jail sentence he will also have to serve six years for an escape charge he got while in community corrections just 12 days before the stabbing death.
The murder occurred April 25 at an Aurora shopping center at 15075 E. Colfax Avenue. According to information in arrest affidavits, Lopez told police he killed Francine Reade, "because he wanted to know what it felt like."
