Man running from Fruita police dies during an officer involved shooting Saturday morning

FRUITA, Colo. - A man was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Fruita early Saturday morning.

Three Fruita police officers pulled over the man during a traffic stop at South Mesa Avenue and Holly Berry Way just after 12:40 a.m., according to Mesa County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Heather Benjamin.

During the stop, the man attempted to run away from the officers when shots were fired, Benjamin said.

The man died at the scene and his cause of death has not been determined, Benjamin said.

Authorities did not release further details, including whether the man was shot or if he had a weapon or threatened officers in some other way.
