STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Police have found a man dead in the Yampa River in downtown Steamboat Springs.

The Steamboat Pilot & Todayreports the man, who jumped into the river overnight Sunday, was found Monday afternoon following an extensive search.

Steamboat Springs Police Chief Cory Christensen says a search team found the man's body submerged in the river about five miles west of where the man jumped.

Christensen says the incident started Sunday night when officers were called to a report of a disturbance in a downtown alley involving a man who had allegedly attempted to steal someone's purse.

After paramedics arrived to check on the man, Christensen says the man took off running and jumped into the Yampa River.

The man's identity has not been released.
