PITKIN COUNTY, Colo. – Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding a man’s death atop McClure Pass along Highway 133 Monday.

The The Pitkin County Coroner's Office identified the man Tuesday evening as 49-year-old Matthew Barz of Longmont.

A person contacted Pitkin County dispatch around 7 a.m. Monday to report an injured man along the road to the pass, which sits west of Aspen near Redstone and Marble. When emergency personnel arrived, they found the Barz dead.

The sheriff’s office says Barz was likely camping in the area, but the injuries that led to his death are still under investigation.

Authorities closed Highway 133 for several hours as they investigated the scene into the afternoon.

Since Barz died near the border of Gunnison and Pitkin counties, authorities are still working to determine who has jurisdiction. But the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office says it is working closely with the Gunnison County Sheriff’s Office, as well as other state and federal agencies.
