Man found dead after 7-hour standoff in Sugar City

SUGAR CITY, Colo. - Authorities say a man was found dead nearly seven hours after he allegedly fired at a deputy and then hid inside a vacant home in the southeastern Colorado town of Sugar City.

Crowley County Sheriff Miles Clark said the man died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound after the standoff Saturday.

Clark didn't release the man's name but said he was 34 and was wanted on an arrest warrant. Clark didn't identify the charge in the warrant.

The sheriff said  deputies surrounded the house and repeatedly ordered the man to leave. Clark says the man didn't respond to a negotiator.

Clark said deputies released tear gas into the home before a SWAT team entered and found the body.

Sugar City is 4 miles east of Ordway.
