Man convicted in 1997 Colo. onion field murder

Victim shot 8 times

GREELEY, Colo. - Jurors convicted a 36-year-old man of first-degree murder in the 1997 death of a fellow onion field worker near Platteville.

Weld County jurors delivered the verdict Wednesday after deliberating for less than a day, and Consuelo Zavala was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The Greeley Tribune reports (http://goo.gl/g849oK ) that Zavala's attorney argued his client suffered from a personality disorder that disconnects him from reality. He had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

But prosecutors argued Zavala's act was deliberate. The victim, Francisco Gasca, was shot eight times.

Authorities say Zavala fled to Mexico after the slaying. He was arrested in Arizona on September 2012 while trying to re-enter the U.S when a records check showed he was wanted on a homicide warrant.
