Man beaten to death with baseball bat, throat slit

Murder suspect claimed he was God

DENVER - A man accused of beating another man to death with a baseball bat near City Park told a witness that he was God and he had "killed the devil," Denver police wrote in court documents released Thursday.

Officers quickly arrested Zachery Joseph Cooper, 25, after the killing, which was reported about 7 p.m. Tuesday in the 2800 block of Adams Street. Police found a man, identified Thursday as Peter Morales, 70, dead in a back bedroom, with a broken baseball bat near his head, according to Cooper's heavily redacted arrest affidavit.

Paramedics checking the man's vital signs noticed that his throat had also been slit. A witness left the home to run errands Tuesday night and returned to find Cooper naked and making comments about the victim "being in heaven and referring to himself as God," the affidavit says. He told the witness everything was going to be OK and started writing on a dry-erase board.
