COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A male driver has been arrested after police say he struck and killed a man and a boy pushing a van that was out of gas in Colorado Springs on Monday afternoon.
Police arrested Robert Icenogle on investigation of vehicular homicide and DUI, the Colorado Springs ABC affiliate KRDO-TV reported.
Police said Icenogle didn't realize the van had stalled in traffic, and he failed to stop in time, slamming into the man and boy pushing the van.
Witness David Dew told KRDO he saw a man pinned underneath the back of the smashed van on Pikes Peak Avenue near Parkside Drive. A badly injured boy, who appeared to be about 9 years old, was lying behind the van.
Dew said he and a nurse, who also happened to be nearby, performed CPR on the boy until an ambulance arrived.
Dew said the man who died was "crushed under the vehicle."
The man was pronounced dead at the scene and the boy was taken to a hospital where he later died, KRDO reported.
Police said a third person pushing the van and two children inside were taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. A woman driving the van was not hurt.
Police did not release the names of the victims or say how they are related.
But Dew said he thinks the people in the van were family members.
"I heard her yelling and cursing and crying and screaming over the child," Dew said of the van driver. "So that's what made me believe it's kind of a family thing."
